The kitchen cabinets are made of birch and the counter top is made of Formica, of which a 22-inch overhang allows for a built-in dining area, and the appliances are stainless steel. This home even includes a washer and dryer built into the side of the refrigerator!

The bedroom loft is large enough to accommodate a queen-size bed, and is also the perfect location to play Scrabble.

The Cocoon Cabin Delivers A Sleek & Sustainable 480sf Design

The Cocoon Cabin represents the smallest of Cocoon9’s prefab designs, but it doesn’t skimp on style. In fact, the entire concept is built upon the idea that prefab/modular housing doesn’t have to be boring. The international design firm built an open and spacious prefab using environmentally-friendly materials like FSC certified bamboo, cerused oak, and insulated glass with thermally broken aluminum frames. Inside you’ll find a variety of furniture and design finishes that serve multiple purposes.

The fold away bed not only makes extra space when neatly tucked into the wall, but also swivels into a desk, and plenty of built-in storage surrounds the bed.

Clean white walls contrast nicely with the warm oak floors.

Huge floor to ceiling windows allow plenty of light to spill in and invite the surroundings inside, making the space feel larger than it actually is.

He Built His Family A Hobbit House From Scraps For $4500

Simon Dale isn’t your ordinary father and this is no ordinary home. After he decided paying a mortgage and incurring debt wasn’t the greatest thing, he moved his family to the Wales countryside. Armed with a hammer, chainsaw, and a chisel, and with no prior building experience, he set to work constructing a home for his family that Bilbo Baggins himself would envy.

He began with some rough sketches to flesh out the idea…

While his wife and two children camped out nearby, he began framing the exterior using felled timber from the forest. The process took him four months.

If you can believe it, he had zero prior experience in carpentry and architecture! Regardless, he learned how to timber frame and use strawbale techniques just fine.

Giving his son a lesson on structural safety…

“Being your own have-a-go architect is a lot of fun and allows you to create and enjoy something which is part of yourself and the land rather than, at worst, a mass-produced box designed for maximum profit and the convenience of the construction industry.”

He used lime plaster on the walls as an alternative to cement and other potentially carcinogenic materials.

The interior is simply stunning, with a magical aura penetrating every corner.

A living roof of grass and moss covers the roof.

The home blends right into the hillside, becoming a natural part of its surroundings.

Unfortunately the local government pushed the family out of this home, citing a lack of proper permits as the reason. However, since building the home in 2003 the family has since moved into a new home, but Simon continues to work on other similar projects, both for his family and others. Students Turned This Old Mobile Home Into A Stylish Zen Masterpiece

In the world of architecture, mobile homes don’t often get much attention for their innovative design approaches. Quite the opposite really. If you came across this home shown below, you might think it was a custom prefab.

And you’d be wrong. Sort of, at least. You see, the home above was built on the shell of this 1960s mobile home:

The drastic facelift came about thanks to the University of Colorado and architecture professor Michael Hughes. They were given a dilapidated mobile home with a leaky roof, rotting wood, and a host of other issues, and told to rebuild it as they saw fit. They tore down the existing shell, and used the 489-square-foot chassis to recreate their version of a mobile home.

Professor Hughes works with students to create memorable designs from the unremarkable. Through projects like TrailerWrap he hopes to address issues of sustainable design in the context of small-scale living.

“TrailerWrap is a collaborative, design + build project that addresses issues of sustainable and affordable design in the context of the ubiquitous American trailer park.”

The design is extraordinary, perfect for a mountain vacation escape or a private urban hideout. The home is located in Chattanooga TN, and comes in at just about 600sf in size, though the layout makes it feel considerably larger.

Solar Powered Rustic/Modern Colorado Cabin Built Using Containers

This contemporary rustic cabin uses shipping containers as pre-fabricated structural shells, and pairs them with more traditional site-built construction techniques for the remainder of the build-out. This allows for a more flexible use of the containers by not being confined to the fixed dimensions that container buildings must typically adhere to. If not for the exposed metal shell you wouldn’t know containers we even used. In many ways it’s the perfect implementation of shipping container construction. Materials and other building components can be flat packed in the unfinished shells and then assembled on-site.
